from CVD Diamond
The diamond detection layer is grown via Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) by Element Six (formerly Drukker), whose antecedents first synthesized diamond in South Africa in 1957; our detectors are built by a specialty house that turns diamond substrates into final products.
Our supplier targets four main markets: high energy physics, nuclear monitoring, radiotherapy dosimetry, and deep UV detection. Their capabilities include material processing (thinning & polishing), die fabrication & testing, die/wire bonding, packaging & detector characterization.

The intrinsic properties that commend diamond to the detection application include: wide band gap (no thermally generated noise), low Z (tissue equivalent), low absorption, high thermal conductivity, and radiation hardness ('rad-hard').
Diamond-based detectors are capable of high sensitivity (application dependent), and good spatial & temporal resolution (10s ps). Spatial resolution is achieved by segmenting the diamond & isolating the pieces ('quad', co-linear, etc).
Lastly, diamond also offers low leakage current and low capacitance; the low capacitance enables higher voltage and, therefor, faster response times.
Diamond can be used to detect:
charged particles, including alpha, beta, high-energy ions, etc;
certain neutral particles, including neutrons with energies above 5.8MeV;
photons with energy > 5.5eV, including UV (<220 nm), all X-ray & gamma rays.
